This light-filled Los Angeles house is inspiring us to cultivate positive energy at home in 2022

Southern California style—that perfect balance between effortless and intentional—is a longtime source of design inspiration for a reason. It has a lot to do with a commitment to natural materials and the way sunlight always hits every corner just so.

This mid-century house in the Hollywood Hills is a master class in designing a healthy, happy home—thanks to a focus on indoor-outdoor living and other healing design elements. To help you bring the good vibes home, we spoke to nontoxic lifestyle expert and author, Sophia Ruan Gushée, and energy intuitive and reiki master, Bridget Ambrose.

“There is a deep connection between your heart, your home and, in turn, your health,” Ambrose says. Read on to learn more.

“Science has proven that bringing nature indoors can facilitate relaxation and healing,” says Ruan. “Simple natural materials can trigger positive energy.” Here, a combination of crystals, natural stone vessels, dried flowers and herbs, and green plants adorn the open living and dining area.

Looking for a mood boost in the kitchen? “Scent can trigger fond memories and positive emotions,” Ruan says. The aroma of everything from a citrusy fresh-pressed juice to a fragrant tea blend can create a subtle shift in your well-being.

“You should live with what you love. Every item in your home is holding energy that is being reflected back to you.”

Natural, sustainably sourced bedding is good for you and good for the planet. In this bedroom, textiles in a mix of neutrals and earth tones create a peaceful backdrop for sleep.

Build a better bath ritual. A body brush can physically energize you—exfoliating skin and increasing blood flow, while bath soaks contain minerals to relieve sore muscles.

When it’s possible to match your tablescape to the landscape, go for it. Handmade ceramics and casual linens follow a less-is-more philosophy.

“The key to changing our habits is replacing our routines with new rituals,” says Ruan. A change of scenery—simply stepping outside—might be all you need. The right accessories, whether outdoor pillows and string lights or a fire pit and knit throw, can make outdoor living a possibility year-round.
