At the Schindler House, wabi-sabi design stands the test of time
West Elm partnered with the MAK Center for Art and Architecture to celebrate this architectural landmark at 100 years
Welcome to the Schindler House, designed by architect Rudolph Schindler and his wife Pauline in 1922. The Los Angeles architectural landmark—considered the birthplace of Southern California modernism—now serves as the headquarters of the MAK Center for Art and Architecture.
This spring, West Elm partnered with the MAK Center to celebrate the iconic home’s 100th anniversary. West Elm had the privilege of photographing our new collections onsite at the Schindler House.
Schindler’s timeless interiors are a case study on the same wabi-sabi aesthetic the inspired our latest designs. Our take on wabi-sabi features sustainably sourced wood, handcrafted ceramics and organic textiles. To discover how you can bring this natural, neutral look home, read on.
The construction of the home, also known as the Kings Road House, is deceptively simple—unadorned concrete slabs comprise the floors, while red wood frames the roof and windows. Humble, natural materials like these are a pillar of wabi-sabi design. A reclaimed pine wood dining table and organic ceramics capture the same spirit.
Rounded cushions soften straight edges, clay accents feel at home against concrete slab floors and light natural-fiber linens accentuate dark, raw-wood finishes. Together, these complimentary pairings create balance.
“Our rooms will descend close to the ground and the garden will become an integral part of the house. The distinction between the indoors and the out-of-doors will disappear. The walls will be few, thin, and removable.”
—Schindler, describing the house in the Los Angeles Times, 1926
The Schindler House was Rudolph’s architectural lab. He designed the outdoor spaces to be shared communally between families. Our bestselling Portside is wire brushed for a weathered, lived-in look, which feels fully at home in this historic setting. Meanwhile, a cozy bistro set for two creates a destination for quiet morning coffee or cocktails.
