A Scandi-style holiday on the California coast
Step inside one of the historic residences of Sea Ranch’s eco-conscious community, where West Elm brought a Nordic holiday to life with candlelight and quilts.
A piece of California history
In 1964, a new type of community was built on an unassuming sheep ranch off the northern California coast. Guided by architects Moore, Lyndon, Turnbull and Whitaker, The Sea Ranch rose as a hamlet of modern forms featuring local redwood timber construction, slanted roofs and panoramic windows designed to appreciate the surrounding environment. The setting seemed like the perfect place to explore Scandinavian design, which shares a focus on natural materials, warm wood tones and minimalist interiors.
In Nordic design, neutrals are often offset with a element of color and comfort, like a traditional quilt. This season, we partnered with Kiva Motnyk at Thompson Street Studio on a limited collection of handmade quilts, so you can bring the look home.
The woodland motif on our holiday dishware is inspired by Scandinavian folk painting. Evergreen sprigs, winter berries and wood accents round out a natural tablescape.
Cue the candlelight
It wouldn’t be a Scandi holiday without hygge—the practice of creating a sense of comfort and togetherness that took the world by storm some years ago. Whether your hygge comes in the form of holiday baking or candlelit dinners with cushy seating, make sure you prioritize all things cozy and bright.
Layer on patterned bedding in a bold hue for a festive look. Here, a black nightstand with open shelves and a sleek lamp in a matching shade provide crisp contrast.
Sleek, simple designs can elevate everything from your bedroom to your holiday decor display
