How to make a space feel more fun

Dabito, the designer and author behind the recently released book Old Brand New, has mastered the art of maximalism. The first chapter asks, “What would Dab do?,” so we asked him to put his process into practice in his own living room.

1

Seating

Pull up an on-trend style by embracing a chair with lean-on-in curves. One way to round out this look? With a circular pillow in a bright shade.

2

Statement lighting

Bring light and texture into your room with a fixture that’s full of personality. Sculptural forms, pleats and pigments will illuminate any corner, even when the switch is off.

3

Gallery wall

As Dabito says, color is a form of comfort. His gallery walls make use of coordinating shades and complementary shapes to create statements that end in exclamation points. Follow his lead and use similar frames for a unified finish.
