Tour an Upstate New York home that mixes clean lines & cozy vibes
Architects Brian Messana and Toby O’Rorke reimagined this 18th-century cottage in Livingston, New York, with a sleek, modern addition.
The result? Old-world charm meets contemporary cool. When decorated with our latest collections, the interiors provide a sophisticated take on all things cozy.
Leaning into warmth and comfort doesn’t mean compromising style. A Scandinavian-inspired foundation of streamlined furnishings feels snug and inviting when surrounded by folk art, handicraft and plenty of chunky knits.
Knotty pine floors and rough-hewn beams display the history of the original cottage. To bring the dining room into the 21st century, we chose furniture with simple shapes and modern rounded edges.
“The renovation of this 18th-century homestead presented an opportunity to stress the tension between antique and modern.”
—Brian Messana, homeowner & architect
Located within the minimalist addition, the kitchen is separated from the cottage by a glass enclosure, which floods the breakfast table with light.
Details make a difference. Give guests a five-star stay with plush organic towels, all-natural sustainable bedding and space to settle in.

The location
Taking this 18th-century cottage (built circa 1734!) into present day, architecture firm Messana O’Rorke had its work cut out for it. “Before we purchased the property, the house was used by migrant farmers working the nearby apple orchards and eventually went into disrepair,” says Brian Messana. The three-year reno was an exercise in bridging old and new. Today, “the house is our getaway from the city—a place to disconnect, rejuvenate, cook and enjoy time with friends and family.”
