See how this husband-wife duo designed a nursery, big-kid room and bathroom packed with personality
Before their second baby’s debut, Bo and Kevin Carney, the co-owners of LA’s beloved Mohawk General Store, decided to update to their 1930s Mediterranean-style home.
A collage of colors
The couple’s son Bowie has a bedroom with white walls, but it’s far from boring. A bunk bed bursts with color-blocked shapes while squiggly stripes on the rug match an array of books on nearby shelves. As long as the main features stay subtle, like white walls and beige curtains,
it’s possible to get away with coloring outside the lines.
The main things we were looking for were square footage and character,” Bo says about the house. “The neighborhood’s trees, parks and other old homes were a bonus.
Say yes to yellow
Bo chose mustard-hued subway tiles in different tones that would add dimension to the walls and selected an equally eye-catching terrazzo for the floors. “We completely gutted it,” she says. “We appreciated the old tiles and details, but ultimately needed something more practical.” A matching bath mat and plant stand—to keep their fern out of reach of their dog Crouton—blend function with personality.
