Longtime friends, photographer Tina Tyrell and designer Billy Cotton, teamed up to renovate her family’s four-story Brooklyn brownstone.
Tyrell and her husband, architect Ethan Pomerance, purchased the home to share with their two children, Prima (age five) and Lucian (age nine). But before they could move in, the interior required a gut renovation to become structurally sound. Enter Cotton, who worked with Tyrell to create a colorful family refuge with character.

“I’m always trying to imbue some warmth in a family home. And obviously it has to be functional to withstand the constant abuse of little people.” — Billy Cotton

“I’ve come to love the entire palette and the way it functions. By not making anything feel particularly kid-like, the house feels pretty adult, and I’m fine with that.”
— Tina Tyrell

The couple’s bedroom is painted in Oval Room Blue. “At first I was kind of nervous,” Tyrell says, “it seemed really dark, but it didn’t take long to fall in love with the color choice. I love living in the blue room. It’s so relaxing.”
