In the studio with Abel Macias

Behind the scenes with the Los Angeles painter and Flamingo Estate collaborator.

“I found this studio through another artist who wanted to pass it along to a fellow artist,” says Abel. “It’s close to my home, and since traffic in LA can really make or break my day, the convenience is ideal.”

Modern-day Renaissance man Abel Macias wears many artistic hats: illustrator, painter, builder and designer. He’s also a frequent collaborator with creative entrepreneur Richard Christiansen, whose dreamy home played backdrop for our latest shoot.

We caught up with Abel at his East LA studio to learn more about his creative process and no-fear approach to color.

“Beauty is where you find it,” says Abel. “Anything can be art if you appreciate it.”

Color play

Abel uses this studio space to hone his craft across mediums. His work draws on nature, particularly Southern California landscapes and those of his Mexican heritage. The result is a kaleidoscopic twist on the familiar.

“How you combine colors can have more of an impact than what colors you choose,” he says. The greens and blues of a climbing vine morph with pink and orange arms of outstretched cacti. There are red rocks, yellow flower petals and purple wings. Abel is all about spotlighting open-air elements you’ve surely seen before—in a fanciful world that’s brighter, warmer and maybe a bit more fun.

Bring color home

“People always say that my work brings them a sense of joy. As an artist, my intention is to make beautiful things that make you feel that.”

From concept to canvas

“Before I start working on a piece, I ask myself, ‘What type of environment is this going in? What’s the inspiration?’” he says. “Then I start thinking about the color and composition. I make it come to life by adding handmade touches, but I also know when to stop so that the art can seem effortless.”
